Life before the internet
Most millennials probably can’t even imagine a world without the internet, and Gen Z onwards probably can’t imagine an Internet without Big Tech domination.
Baby Boomers like myself grew up without the internet and have watched it evolve.
I was online before internet!
Before the internet, there were Bulletin Board Systems (BBS).
The first BBS went online in 1978 and the idea quickly spread all over the world creating an organic, pre-internet online network developed and operated by computer enthusiasts.
These BBS’s were mainly other people’s home computers that you dialled into. I set up The Computer Trouble Shooters BBS for my eight techies which was made available to the public after 9 pm. There were two phone lines so the BBS was always online for the techies during business hours, but could only have one user online most of the time, while the other line was for home use (not many people had mobile phones back then).
So why tell you about this old stuff?
Besides the fact that many will hopefully find it interesting, more importantly, it demonstrates that we (people without the help of Governments or Corporations) were able to build a viable network that facilitated the exchange of information between remote computers without the Internet.
Just imagine what alternatives we can create today…
Step 9
The evolution of the Internet
The consensus is that the internet was born in 1969 with The Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), a packet switching network.
ARPNET is an agency of the Department of Defence, but that network has almost nothing in common with the internet we know today, in-fact, the BBS’s had a lot more in common.
This was because these same computer enthusiasts were the early adopters for the internet and helped build and shape the internet we have today.
The real Internet started in 1983, that is when all the pieces fell into place, but it was another decade before the general public started to use it.
There was no initial governing body or umbrella project to create the internet. The internet evolved through the individual work and collaboration of many people from all over the world.
Most of the early development was done on collage campuses and IT departments of larger corporations because they were the only places where you could find computers and networks.
They created the pieces and made them available for everyone as Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) or under another open licence. I am going to talk a lot more about FOSS in Step?
One of the things this meant was that the software that powered the internet was not owned or controlled by any one person or group. It was freely available for anyone to copy and change which also meant the that the code was transparent, everyone could look at the code and see exactly what it did.
Web 1.0
This was the first internet and it was the wild west
There was no Social Media
Web 2.0
Google did not come onto the scene until 1998 and Facebook in 2004.
You can see that Big Tech are late arrivals to the internet.
They just moved in and are now trying to take it over.
Web 3.0
We have already in the early part of Web 3.0.
