Physical Storage Tips

Do you have a location where you can confidently store your physical book and/or digital copy of the manual?

When choosing a secure home storage, consider the following:

  • Limited Access โ€“ Store your manual in a place that only you or trusted individuals can access (e.g., a locked drawer, safe, or secured filing cabinet).
  • Concealment โ€“ Avoid obvious locations like a bedside table or office desk. Instead, consider hidden compartments or discrete locations.
  • Environmental Hazzards โ€“ Place into a container that will protect it against environmental hazards (fireproof, water-resistant etc)
  • Backup Copy in a Secure Secondary Location โ€“ Store a duplicate copy in a separate secure place, such as a trusted family memberโ€™s home or a safe deposit box.

Digital Storage Tips

Digital storage provides convenience, but it also comes with security risks.

The following are general Digital Storage Tips. In the CARS Workshop, youโ€™ll find the Escape to Digital Freedom Workbook (Joplin) CAR Profile, which explains how to apply them using Joplin.

  • Use Removable Media (For Offline Security)
Consider storing your manual on a USB drive, external hard drive, or SD card. When not in use, keep it disconnected from your devices to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Avoid Online-Connected Devices for Primary Storage
Avoid storing your manual on your personal computer, phone, or any internet-connected device, unless absolutely necessary. If you must store it on your local drive, ensure it is in an encrypted, password-protected location.
  • Be Cautious with Cloud Storage
Only consider highly secure cloud storage providers that offer end-to-end encryption and zero-knowledge privacy policies. Be aware that even secure cloud storage is vulnerable to hacks, breaches, or service failures. Ensure you control access and that no third party can retrieve your data without your consent.
  • Encrypt Your Digital Manual for Extra Security (Advanced)
Encryption ensures that even if your document is stolen, it remains unreadable without your decryption key. Use strong encryption tools like VeraCrypt, BitLocker (Windows), FileVault (Mac), or PGP encryption for your files.
โš ๏ธ Important: Securely store your encryption keys or passwords in a separate, safe locationโ€”losing them means losing access to your manual permanently.
  • Regularly Update & Backup
Maintain a secondary backup in a separate secure location (e.g., an encrypted USB stored in a safe). Periodically update your manual to reflect changes in your accounts, passwords, or digital assets.
